Predictable Performance Powers Quarry Growth

In high‑demand quarrying environments, equipment performance, reliability and cost predictability are critical to keeping operations running efficiently. For Portland Group — a long-established supplier to major construction and infrastructure projects in the Western Cape — partnering with Babcock has brought consistency, clarity and long‑term confidence to their operations.

The relationship between Babcock and Portland Group began in 2012 with the delivery of the company’s first Volvo machine. Since then, the partnership has grown to support key operations across the Durbanville Quarry, Portland’s main quarry, and the Paardeberg Quarry outside Malmesbury.

Portland operates across quarrying, aggregate supply, drilling and blasting, ready‑mixed concrete and precast solutions. In these pressure‑intensive environments, understanding equipment lifecycles is essential for maintaining productivity.

“Most of our equipment runs on a 10 000‑hour lifecycle, but in higher-intensity environments we cycle machines out earlier,” explains Nicol Heyns, Managing Director of Portland Group.

By working closely with Portland’s operational teams, Babcock provides insight that extends beyond the equipment itself. The support includes analysing utilisation trends, application demands and long‑term maintenance considerations. This ensures that Portland purchases and replaces equipment at the right time, reducing the risk of unplanned downtime and unexpected costs.

Today, Portland’s Volvo fleet includes articulated haulers, excavators and wheel loaders configured specifically for the requirements of their high‑output quarries. The fleet has grown steadily over the years as their operations expanded and their trust in Babcock strengthened.

Heyns highlights the value of Babcock’s responsiveness and customer‑centred approach.
“Babcock consistently goes above and beyond what you would normally expect from a supplier. Their team makes a real effort to understand our operational pressures, assess our equipment requirements and accommodate us wherever possible.”

Accessibility has also been a key differentiator.
“Senior management is always accessible — often just a phone call away — which says a lot about their commitment. The people we deal with are professional, direct and easy to work with. There’s a genuine culture of supporting the customer.”

With strong demand, competitive pressures and the need for dependable performance, Portland continues to choose Babcock for the depth of support the business provides.

“There are many suppliers in the market, but once you work with Babcock, you understand why it’s worth it,” Heyns concludes. “There aren’t many companies in South Africa that can offer the level of backup and support that Babcock does.”

The partnership stands as a clear example of how customer‑aligned engineering, long‑term lifecycle insight and responsive service can drive lasting operational value in the quarrying and construction sector.
