Chief Financial Officer - Africa

Overseeing finance and IT for Babcock Africa, Wilna provides unparalleled strategic financial leadership for the Group. Drawing on considerable experience, her core focus is on cash management to generate the necessary funds to ensure Africa is a sustainable and valued contributor to the Babcock International Group.

A true people leader, Welma divides her time building relationships with colleagues, coaching employees to reach their full potential and providing sound strategic guidance and direction for the Engineering business.

Marius Barnard
MD – DAF Trucks

Drawing on 30 years of commercial vehicle experience, Marius now oversees the sales, service, and parts of the DAF brand in South Africa for new and used vehicles, after sales, and dealer networks, Marius is dedicated to creating value for our clients, through  the trust that comes from Babcock’s unrivalled reputation.

Heritage

Since US boiler manufacturer Babcock and Wilcox opened its UK office in 1891 the Babcock International Group has flourished, becoming the UK’s leading engineering support services business.

1800's

Since US boiler manufacturer Babcock and Wilcox opened its UK office in 1891 the Babcock International Group has flourished, becoming an international defence company.

1920's

This was a defining decade for Babcock, as we began our work in the South African power industry by supplying Eskom Colenso in the Natal Midlands with coal-fired boilers. We commissioned these boilers in 1927 to end the decade on a high.

1930's

We expanded our reach in South Africa from 1933, with the supply of boilers for Eskom’s Klip Power Station in Vereeniging. We proudly commissioned these boilers in 1936.

1940's

This decade saw more boilers supplied to the Vaal power station, with final commissioning in 1945. In 1946, Babcock was officially registered as a company in South Africa. Just one year later, our construction equipment business began.

1960's

In the “significant 60’s” we celebrated with Neil Armstrong and his comrades on the moon as we saw remarkable growth on South African soil, too. Babcock multiplied within the power industry by supplying boilers for Eskom to their Taaibos, Klip, Highveld, Komati, Salt River, Grootvlei, and Hendrina plants.

 

1970's

In 1974, we ushered in a new era of development as we received a mammoth order for the 6 x 600MW power station for Eskom Matla, a contract worth R2bn in today’s terms. And in 1979, we cemented our partnership with Lincoln Welding products in South Africa.

1980's

We had scarcely commissioned the Matla power station in 1983 when we received the Lethabo power station’s order in 1984. Together, nine Babcock Group companies designed and built this station with uncompromising excellence. As the decade closed out, in 1988 and 1990, Babcock was chosen as the main contractor for the Mossgas Project. We completed four of the seven offshore modules, which were the first of their kind in South Africa.

1990's

These were the “Noteworthy Nineties” for Babcock, as we relocated a 400-ton Acrylonitrile Plant from Enns, Austria to Secunda, South Africa to the tune of R300m in 1993. We began our fabrication facility in Jet Park, and, in 1994, we established our plant hire business. In 1997, we commemorated Babcock’s official 50th Anniversary in South Africa, and George Babcock and Stephen Wilcox were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

2000's

No matter the decades that pass, Babcock has remained committed to growth and excellence. We continue to be leaders in our field, and, in 2000, Babcock became the sole distributor for Volvo Construction Equipment in Southern Africa. 

2010's

These were outstanding years for Babcock, as we secured partnerships with numerous world-renowned brands for the Southern African market. From 2010 to 2016, we became the official dealer for DAF Trucks, PACCAR parts, Shandong Lingong (SDLG) construction machinery and Sennebogen cranes.

2021

The Babcock International Group pledges to reduce emissions to net zero by 2040. In 2020 we developed an ESG strategy, and we continue to build on it. We are at the start of our journey but we’re developing the targets that we want to be measured by as we make progress along the route.

2023

In 2023 Babcock partnered with BULL to become the exclusive supplier of BULL tractor loader backhoes (TLBs) and BULL skid steers in southern Africa.
